He had obtained Honours and Awards - Kalakeerthi, Vishvaprasadhini, Chevalier dans I'rdre des Palmes Academicque, twice Fulbright Senior Fellow, Emeritus Professor of English, University of Peradeniya, Homin and other Poems shortlisted for the Grateaen Prize, 1991, member of the '43 Group since 1951.

He has been a University teacher for 50 years since January 1957 and Professor for 42 years. He has concurrently held several other university positions such as Dean Arts, University Proctor, Director of Student Welfare, Chairman University Arts Council, besides serving as Chairman of several National Committees for cultural and educational activities.

He has published three volumes of poetry, translations of two novels by Martin Wickramasinghe, several Sinhala poems and short stories for the UNESCO Volume of Modern Sinhala Literature and edited the George Keyt Feliciation Volume, 1976,. He is the author of over 50 academic papers on Literature, Drama and Art.

He has directed 15 plays including Macbeth and Twelfth Night, and plays by Gorky, Cocteau, Strindberg, Max Frisch, etc.

He is an artist who was admitted to membership of well-known '43 Group of Sri Lankan artists in 1951 and has exhibited paintings in London, Bristol, Sao Paolo, Colombo and Kandy.
