message from our Academic directorWelcome to the new IEMS Syllabus!
I am delighted to present to you this compilation of tasks and guidelines, for the graded examinations in Spoken English, Speech and Drama and Written English. Every attempt has been made to provide for both the teacher and pupil a clear, relevant, cutting edge document, with a view to maximize classroom participation and to facilitate and optimize the learning experience of our precious children whose destinies are irrevocably entwined with the compelling need for fluency in the English language. The Spoken English and Written English syllabi have been meticulously crafted to ensure incremental progress in the crucial areas of language acquisition: Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. As students journey through this graded Programme which, if put to its best use, will serve as a catalyst for both highly interactive classroom learning and focused immersion in terms of personal study and inquiry, their quest for competence will be well rewarded. Detailed instructions to teachers have been provided, prompted by some of the radical changes introduced, and with the objective of minimizing ambiguity in terms of assessment criteria at examinations. The Speech and Drama syllabus, as the term implies, addresses a repertoire of achievements vastly different to those dealt with in the Spoken and Written English branches of language learning. While the former is designed to provide functional competence leading to efficient use for more practical purposes, the latter places its focus on the artistic and literary components of communication where the emphasis shifts to performance techniques associated with the exploration and exploitation of language, voice and movement. Accordingly, the development of artistic skills is a key objective here, and the tasks prescribed mirror those expectations. Teachers must read through the entire syllabus so as to obtain a more comprehensive perspective of the overall aims and objectives of the Programmes offered. Additionally, the supplementary exam publications will further streamline classroom teaching and the preparation of students for examinations. These serve as concise manuals providing instructions, practice exercises and assessment expectations for the specified grades. Nevertheless, additional reading and research must be carried out both by teachers and students of higher grades for real mastery and confidence in both learning and teaching. And so, I place before you now the gauntlet of my long cherished vision: the nurturing of world class Sri Lankans, who can face the challenges of the future with dignity and confidence. May the years that have vanished behind us and the paths that stretch, shining before us bear witness to all our endeavors, and crown our aspirations with corresponding success.
